Celebrating International Cat Day

While any household with a cat will tell you that every day is Cat Day, there is an official day to celebrate all things cat: today, August 8th, is International Cat Day!

In honour of our feline friends, we’re introducing you to a few of the cats in the lives of our Natusan team members.

Cats in the UK

We recently took a deep dive into the history of the house cat, charting cats’ journey from wild cats to sharing our sofas. They were certainly successful: according to a 2021 report by Cats Protection, there are 10.8 million pet cats in the UK—with 26% of households home to at least one cat.

Team Natusan & Their Cats

Here at Natusan we’re a team of animal lovers, but as you can imagine, cats tend to take the top spot. For International Cat Day we want to showcase some of the feline faces behind our Natusan team, so let’s introduce you to some cats…

Elvin (& Darya)

This beautiful boy is Elvin, who shares his home with Natusan team member Darya.

Which three words would you use to describe Elvin?

Curious, cuddly, talkative.

What is your favourite thing about Elvin?

He is just a fantastic buddy to have nearby and talk to. He is incredibly social and always wants to stay close. When I am working, he is sitting on the table (or on the keyboard). When I am cooking, he is sitting nearby. The moment I sit down on the sofa, he is on my lap. He follows my every step and does not hesitate to ask for more attention and pets! And when he notices I am awake, he meows, purrs and hurries up for a portion of morning cuddles.

How did Elvin come into your life?

We got him already as an almost 1.5-year-old cat. He was brought from Siberia to Germany for breeding, but something didn’t work out for the breeder, and he was giving him away. At that moment of time, we were already considering getting a cat, so when I saw an ad online I immediately sent a message. I have lived my whole life with either Siamese or Oriental cats, so it was a lucky coincidence

Caio (& Sara)

Say hello to Caio. In Portuguese his name means “I fall”, because Caio threw himself out of the window on his first day at home. He is—and we don’t think he will mind us saying this—a chonky boy. We asked Sara a few questions about Caio. This is what she said:

Which three words would you use to describe Caio?

Independent, fierce, and hungry!

How did Caio come into your life?

My mum adopted him from a litter of stray cats.

What is your favourite thing about Caio?

He has the strongest personality and won’t take no for an answer. A very independent boy that will demand to be freed into the world when he gets sick of napping at home. He’s also constantly in search of food which makes him a chubby fluff ball! Since he spends lots of time outside, all the neighbours fell in love with him because of his cute looks—so, as a smart boy, he uses his charm to get some additional food resources when he’s outside.

Bella (& Kieran)

And last but definitely not least, it’s Bella. Bella is a 10 year old tabby and lives with Natusan team member Kieran. She’s something of a celebrity here at Natusan, having already had her own profile on our blog, Bella’s Story. Here are a few highlights:

If you could describe Bella in three words, what would they be?

Sassy, cantankerous, and content.

How long have you had Bella?

We’ve had Bella for about 8 years. When me and my partner Andrew first got together, I moved to London from Manchester and I didn’t really know anybody. I was just working and stuff, and I told Andrew that I really REALLY wanted a pet. He wasn’t particularly keen on it, and I really had to convince him.

So we decided to get a cat because they are really low-maintenance, they pretty much look after themselves, and we were out all the time (these days, not so much). I really wanted to adopt a cat, so we got her from a rehoming website and we went to see maybe three or four cats (I would have had any of them, to be fair) but we settled on Bella.

If you could talk to Bella for 10 seconds, what would you say?

I would say to Bella: “I’m only chasing you because I want a cuddle. I love you so much that I want more cuddle time with you! Are you happy? Is there anything else that you want? I promise you’re not going to be on a diet forever!”
