questions about our Litter

Natusan clumping litter is made from 100% PEFC-certified, recycled wood materials, a by-product of the timber industry meaning no additional trees are felled in the making. Not only is it 100% biodegradable, but it's also highly absorbent and clumps each time your cat uses their tray.

To ensure Natusan’s very good clumping performance we add a small amount of another one of nature’s miracles: a natural hydrocolloid. This is a natural glue activated by moisture, making sure that the granules stick to each other when they get wet.
Natusan is organic clumping litter made from 100% natural wood fibres and DOES NOT contain Bentonite. You can read more about this in our article "Cat Litter and The Environment" over on the Blog.
Most mineral clumping litters are made of, or at least contain, bentonite. This clay mineral can be quite heavy at approximately 1kg per litre. Natusan is made entirely from natural wood fibres and does not contain bentonite, when compared to a mineral based litter, it’s much lighter at around 330g-480g per litre. You can find our more about this in our "Small But Mighty" article over on the Blog.
There are two main types of cat litter - clumping or non-clumping.  Clumping is simply where the waste (especially the urine) “clumps” together in lumps.  Non-clumping is where the constituent litter particles do not clump together (i.e. they remain as separate particles) despite being soaked in urine. Clumping litter allows you to remove clumps, leaving behind fresh litter so you make full tray changes less frequently.

questions about disposing of Natusan litter

Our litter is made from 100% PEFC-certified, recycled wood materials with no added fragrance or nasty chemicals, however, it’s best to check the guidelines set by your local council when it comes to garden waste and composting.
Even though Natusan clumping litter is biodegradable and compostable we generally do not recommend to do this using private / at home composting systems or garden compost heaps.

This is because private / at home composting systems do not reach a sufficient temperature to reliably kill all bacteria and/or parasites possibly contained in used cat litter / cat faeces.

Using this potentially infectious compost in your garden could lead to a spread or a re-infection of pathogens.

Composting in industrial composting systems is absolutely possible (and we do this as part of the Natusan Collect & Compost service), however, most councils do not allow the collection of any used cat litter in garden waste bins. If you’re unsure of the rules around this then we recommend you contact your local council for more information.
Natusan is made from 100% PEFC-certified, recycled wood materials and dissolves entirely in water, however, we recommend that you check with your local wastewater service provider before flushing the clumps down the toilet.
Ideally, you should remove the clumps from your cat's litter tray as and when they appear, however we know that’s not always possible. At the very minimum, the clumps should be removed daily.
In terms of disposing of the clumps throughout the month, there are a few options available:

1 )Our litter is made from 100% wood fibre so your local council may accept this as part of their garden waste collection. It is important to say that we DO NOT recommend that you include the clumped faeces with your garden waste due to the risk of Toxoplasmosis (Toxoplasma Gondii). It is best to speak with your council to check their guidelines around Garden Waste/Composting for more details

2) You could check with your local wastewater service provider as our litter dissolves entirely in the water so the option to flush the clumps may be available to you. For sustainability reasons we also do not recommend flushing as with each “flush” between 6 and 9 litres of fresh water are used

3) Dispose of them in your domestic waste. Although this is our least preferred option, if you’ve switched to Natusan clumping litter from a non-clumping litter, you could reduce the waste going to landfill by up to 65%* and if you’ve switched from a mineral-based clumping litter, you will have reduced the volume ending up in landfill as, when incinerated, Natusan clumping litter only leaves a small heap of ash whereas mineral clumping litters retain their volume and fill up the landfills.

questions about using Natusan litter

If you know your cat can be fussy with their litter tray, it’s best to take a slow and steady approach when switching their litter. We recommend a gradual changeover by mixing a small amount of Natusan in with the current brand every day for several days. This changeover should typically take place over three to five days *Note: for Collect & Compost customers, we’re unable to compost any external debris, so the litter used in the initial changeover should be discarded in the domestic waste.
We recommend a two-inch layer of litter covering the entire tray. This will give your cat enough room to dig with adequate covering afterwards. All cats are different, so it’s important to pay attention to your cat's litter tray habits to see whether you need to adjust this level up or down.
When switching from non-clumping litter to Natusan, a little goes a very long way! For example, one 10L bag of Natusan will last around four weeks for an average small-medium indoor cat. Of course, we understand that every cat has their quirks, and all households are different, so our friendly Customer Care team is always on hand to offer bespoke advice based on your current litter type and volume. You can either drop us a note at help@natusan.co.uk or call us on 020 3389 9331, any working day between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. **It’s also important to note that not all cat litter brands include the initial tray fill in their consumption calculations.
It’s common for kittens to explore their surroundings with all senses, including taste and while Natusan is safe for cats of all ages, it’s recommended that your kitten is weaned before making the transition, usually this is around 12 weeks.
When pregnant, we recommend that you follow the advice provided by the NHS, which is not to empty your cat litter tray but if possible, get somebody else to do this for you. Alternatively, if this is not an option, you should wear disposable rubber gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

questions about odour control

All plant-based raw materials have characteristic smells e.g. wheat smells like wheat, corn smells like corn and Natusan clumping litter smells like wood, because that’s the raw material it is made of. Generally this smell is described as very pleasant and natural – similar to freshly cut wood.
Odour control in cat litter is mainly about avoiding the formation of ammonia. Natusan performs on average 1.4 x better on odour control* (measured by ammonia concentration) when compared to other natural clumping litters.

Natusan forms very small, stable and well shaped clumps. Their texture is slightly elastic, but easy to remove from the litter tray. Natusan forms very efficient clumps due to the low clump volume compared to other litters*. This means the litter can absorb the urine very efficiently and keep the odour trapped. Standard mineral clumping products (bentonite) vary hugely regarding odour control properties and can have an ammonia concentration of up to almost double Natusan after day 1 and up to over 3 times the ammonia concentration on day 3!*

*in a study where we compared Natusan clumping litter to 14 other natural clumping litters.
If you didn't remove clumps daily then:

On day 3 (say if you go away for the weekend), the ammonia levels in Natusan litter are an estimated 25% less on average *compared to other natural litters.

On day 1 (say if you forget to remove clumps one day), the ammonia levels in Natusan litter are an estimated 29% less on average* compared to other natural litters.

However, we of course recommend removing clumps daily.

questions about litter trays and tracking mats

Natusan clumping litter is suitable for any type of litter tray, with the exception of some litter robots
We find that a tray with a high lip works very effectively to reduce tracking in combination with a great tracking mat. We would consider a high lip to be anything above 10cm.

Click the link below to get more tips on preventing tracking including some interesting hacks!
We have done A LOT of research on tracking mats over the past year. We find that Double Layered Honeycomb mats are one of the best ways to combat tracking as the litter falls through to the second layer, which can then be emptied back into the tray to minimise waste.

Our team has found through personal experience that a tracking mat like this combined with a high lip tray combats tracking very effectively and results in almost zero tracking.

questions about our collect & compost service

After the Natusan Tray has been fully assembled, the dimensions are L 54.5cm W 36cm H 41cm.
Cat faeces actually makes great compost. It provides an excellent source of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium for plant nutrients and is perfectly safe to use. The method that our composting partners use is very different from the way that we compost at home. In-vessel composting is treated on an industrial scale where it reaches a minimum temperature and is held in order to kill even the most resistant bacteria. On top of that, it is mixed with the correct co-products, which in turn produce a better quality fertiliser. We work very closely with our composting partners who are compliant with EU Regulations and certified under the waste regulations in England and Wales.
We want everything! If you’re subscribed to our Collect & Compost service, you can store the clumps and faeces throughout the month and send everything back to us for composting.
If you’re subscribed to our Collect & Compost service, you will receive two compostable bags with your order, which you may choose to use to store the clumped urine and faeces. Then, at the end of the month, simply pop everything inside the collection bag, leave on your doorstep* and our friendly couriers will take care of the rest.
Sadly, for the time being, we can only compost cat faeces; however, we will update you when we’re able to compost other animal waste.

questions about waste and savings claims

At Natusan, we are stats people! We find that using statistics is a great way to explain some of our key benefits to our website visitors. We could tell you that you will reduce your cat litter waste by switching to Natusan, but we understand you'll want to know by how much compared to the waste your cat litter creates today.

We also understand that you will want to know where these claims have come from and check that they are truthful. That's why we will always add an asterisk when we make a claim on our website.

We pride ourselves on transparency so if you would like even more information, our Customer Care team are more than happy to talk you through the detail behind these claims on the phone or by email.
We have done extensive research on the performance of Natusan litter in comparison to other litters. We know that in comparison to Non-Clumping litter, you will reduce the amount of litter you use by up to 65% and in comparison to other Clumping litters, you will reduce your waste by up to 30%. You can find more information on these statistics on our Terms & Conditions page. These waste savings allow us to make the comparisons in our waste calculator.

For non-clumping litter waste savings, we ask you how many times a month you do a full tray change. This allows us to calculate how much litter you use a month, and we compare this to only needing to do a full tray change once a month with Natusan. This then allows us to calculate how much waste you could save over a year.

For non-clumping litter money savings claims, we take the average monthly usage volumes above (depending on how often you change your tray) and the average price point of a premium non-clumping litter. We then calculate the potential savings over a year.

For clumping litter waste savings, we assume you do a full tray change once a month and make a comparison with how much litter is required to form a clump using Natusan vs. the average clumping litter. We assume you remove 3 clumps daily from your litter tray. This then allows us to calculate how much waste you could save over a year.

For clumping litter money savings claims, we take the monthly usage volumes above and the average price point of a premium clumping litter. We then calculate the potential savings over a year.
"Natusan produces 65% less waste." Claim based on a study where we compared Natusan clumping litter to 1 other high performance, premium non-clumping litter. Last comparison conducted in August 2020.

"Save up to £160 a year by switching to Natusan". Claim based on the average monthly consumption of Natusan clumping litter vs. non-clumping premium litter. We compare the price of a 40L bag on subscription.

"Natusan is 60% lighter than mineral based clumping litters". Natusan litter has a density of 330-480 grams per litre while a mineral-based clumping litter has a density of approx. 1kg per litre. Per kg, this means Natusan is approx. 60% lighter if we take the average density of 405 grams per litre.

"Spend 75% less time cleaning with Natusan litter". Claim based on needed to do a full tray change once a month with Natusan vs. a weekly change for non-clumping litters.

"40,000kg of waste reduced so far". Based on waste savings of 65% by switching to Natusan litter (see above for information on 65% claim).

"An estimated 2 million tons of cat litter goes to landfill every year in the UK". Based on calculations from figures extracted from 2018 Paw Report, Nielsen Consumer Panel July 2020 and 2019 Department of Environment Food & Rural Affairs as at June 2020
We define these by the price you pay per litre:

Clumping basic: 0-50p per litre

Clumping standard: 51p-£1 per litre

Clumping premium Over £1 pre litre

Non clumping basic 0-0.25p per litre

Non clumping standard: 0.26-50p per litre

Non clumping premium: Over 50p per litre
