What is clumping and non-clumping cat litter?

There are two main types of cat litter - clumping or non-clumping. Clumping is simply where the waste (especially the urine) “clumps” together in lumps. Non-clumping is where the constituent litter particles do not clump together (i.e. they remain as separate particles) despite being soaked in urine. Clumping litter allows you to remove clumps, leaving behind fresh litter so you make full tray changes less frequently.

How deep should cat litter be?

We recommend a two-inch layer of litter covering the entire tray. This will give your cat enough room to dig with adequate covering afterwards. All cats are different, so it’s important to pay attention to your cat's litter tray habits to see whether you need to adjust this level up or down.

How do I dispose of Natusan in an environmentally friendly way?

Even though Natusan clumping litter is biodegradable and compostable we generally do not recommend to do this using private / at home composting systems or garden compost heaps. This is because private / at home composting systems do not reach a sufficient temperature to reliably kill all bacteria and/or parasites possibly contained in used cat litter / cat faeces. Using this potentially infectious compost in your garden could lead to a spread or a re-infection of pathogens. Composting in industrial composting systems is absolutely possible (and we do this as part of the Natusan Collect & Compost service), however, most councils do not allow the collection of any used cat litter in garden waste bins. If you’re unsure of the rules around this then we recommend you contact your local council for more information.

How often should I do a full litter change?

At least once per day you should remove the clumps and solid faeces from the litter tray and you should regularly top up the removed volume to maintain a filling height of 2 inches. The more thorough you are with the removal of the clumps, the longer the initial filling of Natusan clumping litter can stay in the litter tray. For hygienic reasons (splashes of urine on the side of the litter tray, small pieces of clumps broken off during digging, etc.) you should completely empty the litter tray after approximately four weeks, clean it thoroughly with warm soapy water (please don’t use vinegar or cleaning fluids containing ammonia/bleach), wipe it dry and fill it with fresh litter. We don’t advise that you use litter tray cleaning sprays for stain & odour removal in the tray as it will clump the litter.

How often should I clean my cat's litter tray?

Ideally, you should remove the clumps from your cat's litter tray as and when they appear, however we know that’s not always possible. At the very minimum, the clumps should be removed daily.

How it Works

Using Natusan Wheat clumping litter couldn’t be easier, simply follow these steps:

Pour the contents of the bag into your tray so it completely covers the bottom (at least 2.5 inch (6cm) to avoid clumps from sticking to the bottom)
On contact with liquid, Natusan Wheat clumping litter will form tight clumps that can be removed leaving only fresh litter behind (see images to see how our litter clumps)
Use a scoop to remove faeces and clumps from your tray every day and dispose of these
Top up with fresh litter when required, maintaining a constant level of 2.5 inch (6cm), and change the litter completely on a regular basis (once a months). If you have under-floor heating make sure to put insulating material under the litter box.
