World Environment Day 2022

With the four day weekend and Platinum Jubilee celebrations happening from Thursday to Sunday, it would be easy to miss another important event that’s taking place. Sunday June 5th is World Environment Day, the UN’s global platform to celebrate, protect, and restore our planet, and while it might not have corgis and cake, it’s vitally important for us all. At Natusan we do all we can to protect the planet and help pet owners reduce their environmental impact, so World Environment Day is something to shout about!

What is World Environment Day?

World Environment Day is led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and has been held annually on June 5th since 1974. It’s the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated all over the world! This year it’s being hosted by Sweden, which is where the whole idea started 50 years ago.

The first ever United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm in 1972, and it put sustainable development on the global agenda. It also led to the founding of World Environment Day 2 years later, in 1974. That first conference had the slogan “Only One Earth”, and as that message is even more important 50 years on, UNEP has taken that original slogan for this year’s event.

This year’s campaign: #OnlyOneEarth

The World Environment Day 2022 campaign #OnlyOneEarth calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet. Its message has only become more important over the last 50 years, and with this campaign, UNEP wants to highlight the emergency facing our planet.

UNEP says: “We are using the equivalent of 1.6 Earths to maintain our current way of life, and ecosystems cannot keep up with our demands.”

World Environment Day wants to push to make sustainability standard: making sustainable options affordable and accessible, so that they can become the default for everybody. This of course starts at the top, with governments and corporations, but it extends down to individual lifestyle choices too. In fact, UNEP states that “sustainable lifestyles and behaviours could reduce our emissions by 40 to 70% by 2050.”

How is Natusan helping the environment?

We developed Natusan to provide cat parents with sustainable options and help them to reduce their waste, but our commitment to the environment goes further than that.

We’ve been working with Ecologi for the last 17 months to plant a tree for every Natusan order, as well as supporting other projects to protect and restore our planet. Together we’ve planted over 65,000 trees and Ecologi are also working on varied projects both at home and overseas, from creating wildflower meadows in Scotland to restoring forests in South America

How to get involved

You can find out more about World Environment Day on their website, and get involved in events near you. They’ve even put together a practical guide to living sustainably, which was developed especially for this year’s event and is available to download.

And, as always, you can find more sustainable lifestyle tips here on our blog, including our little ways to be more sustainable in 2022.
